The Great Divide: Theory and Practice in and of Translation

Introduction by Dr. Anne Stokes

Our first meeting will be introduced by Dr. Anne Stokes. Anne, who lectures in Translation Studies at the University of Stirling, translates German poetry, fiction, and non-fiction (into UK or US English). Amongst her translations are Sarah Kirsch, Ice Roses: Selected Poems, selected, translated and introduced by Anne Stokes (Carcanet: Manchester, 2014), which was shortlisted for the Oxford-Weidenfeld Translation Prize and the Popescu European Poetry Translation Prize in 2015, and Dörte Hansen, This House is Mine (St. Martin's Press, NY, 2016), her translation of Altes Land (Knaus, 2015), which was nominated for the ATA's Ungar German Translation Prize 2017 and long-listed for the 2018 International DUBLIN Literary Award.

She will talk about how she got into translation, and discuss the link between “doing” and “teaching” translation.
