'Tobacco Flower'

Cooper Gallery | Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design

The exhibition 'Tobacco Flower' is a major installation of new work by artist Jimmy Robert, which focuses in particular on relationships between Europe and the Caribbean. At a time in which Britain’s relationship with Europe is highly uncertain, and its historical culpability as a colonial power is keenly debated, this subject matter is both urgent and contentious.

Robert handles such contested material through subtle means and with careful attention to difference and specificity. The work is as concerned with intimate experience as it is with political contexts. Working across several mediums, including film and performance, Robert engages directly with The Hunterian and its historical collections in order to examine the cultural framing of identities and desires.
