Cast: Rainer Bock, Albrecht Schuch

Walter, a former weight lifter and now furniture remover, is supposed to clear out a flat with his company. When the door is opened by a young father, Walter thinks he recognizes the son he abandoned years ago. What starts as a cautious attempt to get to know the young family ends in a complicated and dangerous mission to keep them safe.

David Nawrath’s cinema debut Atlas tells a complicated father-and-son story against a backdrop of the criminal activities of Arabic Clans involved in the illegal real-estate business in German cities.

Mahmoud Jaraba
Mahmoud Jaraba joined Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology (MPI) in January 2018 as a postdoctoral research fellow in the research project ‘Conflict Regulation in Germany’s Plural Society’. He aims to extend his earlier research project, Paralleljustiz (Parallel Justice), which was based at the Erlangen Centre for Islam and Law in Europe (EZIRE) at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg. Jaraba’s goal is to further explore the kind(s) of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms that exist among Kūsāwīya (Muḥallamī) in Germany. Using an ethnographic approach, he plans to identify the major actors and the mechanisms that “Arab clans” use in order to reach extrajudicial settlements. Prior to joining the MPI, Jaraba was involved in the research project Muslime in Bayern (‘Muslims in Bavaria’) with the EZIRE and the Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften (Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities). By using an ethnographic approach (conducting participant observation and in-depth interviews), he explored how Salafists build their networks, frame their ideology, and recruit young Muslims.
