Interested in German books? Join us online for a discussion about the novel 'Marzahn, mon amour' by Katja Oskamp. New members welcome!

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Katja Oskamp is in her mid-forties when life becomes stagnant. Her child has left home, her husband is ill and she can’t make ends meet as a writer. So she decides to make a go of it as a chiropodist in Marzahn, the largest area of 'Plattenbauten' (prefabricated buildings) in the GDR. A job that could be seen as failure by many but the people who live and work there know all about hardship. And it is the people and their individual stories shared with her that Oskamp pays homage to in her book.  She vividly, sensitively and humorously describes her clients with the respect and dignity she shows them during the treatment of their soles.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Katja Oskamp, born in Leipzig in 1970, grew up in Berlin. After her theatre studies, she worked as a dramaturge at the Volkstheater Rostock and studied at the German Literature Institute in Leipzig. So far, she has published the volume of short stories Halbschwimmer and the novels Die Staubfängerin and Hellersdorfer Perle.
