Drawing from Joachim Gasquet’s 1921 memoir of Paul Cézanne, the film pays a tribute to the French master Huillet and Straub greatly admired. Excerpts from the memoir are blended with photographs of Cézanne, clips from Jean Renoir’s
Madame Bovary, and scenes of Mont Sainte-Victoire, about which the artist noted, 'Look at this mountain: it was once fire.’
