Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival

Marwa Arsanios, Elise Florenty & Marcel Türkowsky, Angela Schanelec

Once more the Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival makes sure that film and media lovers in the north of England and across the near-by border in Scotland have a chance to see exciting and challenging new work from all over the world.

We are pleased to assist with bringing the festival’s artist in profile, Marwa Arsanios,  to Berwick. Arsanios works with installation, performance and moving image to interrogate gendered labour, non-human ecologies and the histories of collectivism. During the festival she will not only present her more recent film and older works but also lead a seminar giving insight into her work practice and introduce the avant-garde classic A Hundred Faces for a Single Day (1971) by Christian Ghazi (see below for overview of events.)

Attending the world premiere of their new film in Berwick will be artist / film director duo Elise Florenty & Marcel Türkowsky, who are based in Berlin and Paris. In Back to 2069 (Belgium, France, Germany 2019) the eroded landscape of the Greek militarized Aegean island Lemnos is the site where myth meets contemporary concerns upon the relation of virtual and real image production.

After presenting the first comprehensive retrospective of the work of Berlin based filmmaker Angela Schanelec at the Goethe-Institut in September 2018, we are delighted that the festival will present her most recent film I was At Home, But  (Ich war zuhause, aber), which premiered in the competition of this year’s Berlin Film Festival and earned Schanelec the Silver Bear for Best Director.
