The films that were produced during the Nazi rule were not only technically proficient, they were emotional, made people yearn for and dream about places far away and times long gone. They were pure escapism. The cinema was industrialized and manipulative. Perhaps the feelings evoked by these films were more often than not self-deception and false feelings. But they were feelings nonetheless. This is the only way to explain the impact of the NS-cinema.
Millions went to the cinema back then. Which dreams were being dreamt by the Germans in their very own German dream factory? What were they supposed to be dreaming if it was up to those in power? How does propaganda work?
Rüdiger Suchsland’s film takes a closer look at the roughly 1000 feature films made in Germany between 1933 – 1945, examining how stereotypes of the enemy and values of love and hate managed to be planted, into the head of the German people, through the cinema screens.
