5:45 PM - 11:10 PM

Institut français du Royaume-Uni

Launched by the Institut français in 2016, this year’s Night of Ideas asks what being alive means today, when nature is threatened and technology seems all-powerful. Some say we’re on the brink of extinction. Some say we can build a new man. Staged simultaneously in Paris, London and worldwide and crossing French, British and European perspectives, this new edition engages audiences in debates, music and other activities to question, collectively, the borders of our humanity and rethink what was once taken for granted.

Panel Discussion: Our Digital Lives (20:20-21:20 - Ciné Lumière)

We are pleased to support the participation of Lorena Jaume-Palasi, founder of The Ethical Tech Society, in a debate which explores how the democratisation of social networks and big data has led to a confusion between private and public; between what we really want and what we are told to like. How does this affect our capacity to make choices, and the control we have over our own lives? Jaume-Palasi will join Mercedes Bunz, Senior Lecturer in Digital Society, King’s College London, and Gaspard Koenig, Philosopher & Founder of GenerationLibre on the panel chaired by Greg Williams, Editor-in-chief, WIRED.

Lorena Jaume-Palasí is the founder of The Ethical Tech Society, a fact and theory based non-profit initiative focused on automation and digitisation processes with regards to their social relevance. In 2017 she was appointed by the Spanish government to the High Level Expert Council on Artificial Intelligence and Big Data and is one of the 100 experts of the Cotec Foundation. In 2018 she was awarded the Theodor Heuss Medal “for her contribution to a differentiated view of algorithms and their mechanisms of action”.
