Join us for the third instalment of our Translation Theory Lab!

The Translation Theory Lab is free and open to all translators, near and far, working in any language pair, who have an interest in the background questions, the theory and ethics of translation. The Translation Theory Lab is an online-meeting via Zoom from 6.30pm to 8pm, organised by the Goethe-Institut in Glasgow.

The starting point for this Translation Theory Lab is Kate Briggs’ non-fiction book/autobiographical memoir about translating, This Little Art (Fitzcarraldo, 2017), which we’ll discuss in more detail in the spring and summer of 2020. It raises questions such as:

Is translation an art or a craft?

The ethics of mistakes: are translators allowed to mistranslate? Should they correct mistakes in the source text?

Are you a ‘translator’ if you are not fluent in the source language of the text you’re translating?

Can you live of being a ‘literary translator’ or will it only ever be an intellectual hobby?

If you are interested in attending one or all the meetings, please sign up for free on our Eventbrite page, and join our Facebook group for more discussion.
