"1.000 Serpentinen Angst" by Olivia Wenzel

For the seventh meeting of our international online book club, we've invited the author Olivia Wenzel to read and discuss her novel 1.000 Serpentinen Angst with us.

THE BOOK: "1.000 Serpentinen Angst"

"I have more privileges than any person in my family has ever had. And yet, I'm screwed. I'm hated by more people than my grandmother can imagine. On the day of the federal election, I spend 20 minutes trying to talk her out of voting for a right-wing party by making this claim."
A young woman attends a play about the fall of communism and is the only black audience member. With her boyfriend, she sits by a lake in Brandenburg and sees four neo-Nazis approaching. In New York, she experiences Trump's election victory in a strange hotel room. Angry and passionate, she looks at our rapidly changing times and also tells the story of her family: of her mother, who was a punk in the GDR and never had the freedom she dreamed of; of her grandmother, whose life spent towing the party line brought her prosperity and security; and of her twin brother, who was killed when she was seventeen.
