It is at a fun fair that Asli sees Saeed for the first time. Just before the start of a daring ride, he gets out of the gondola, ridiculed by his friends for being scared. Asli and Saeed will meet again, fall in love and get married. We will follow all of this through Asli's eyes.

The love between the quiet Turkish-German medical student and the lively dentistry student from a wealthy Beirut family is strong, but also complicated. Since her mother holds deep prejudices against Arabs, Asli keeps her relationship with Saeed a secret, putting their relationship at risk. Nevertheless, they stay together and at the wedding she promises him to keep all his secrets. Although Asli already suspects at this point that this is not simply a marriage formula, she makes the promise. Over the years Saeed keeps many secrets often leaving Asli distraught or angry. Yet her love and loyalty keep her from facing the truth about her husband until the unimaginable happens.

In five chapters, Anne Zohra Berrached, whose breakthrough film was the 2016 abortion drama 24 Weeks, tells of a love that overcomes personal and cultural differences, but also nourishes the deep ideological convictions to which it ultimately falls victim. Though inspired by real people and events and based on detailed research, the film is not about reconstructing a historical event but about exploring it through the prism of interpersonal relationships and through two powerful lead performances.

Germany / France 2021. Colour, 118 mins. German, English, Arabic, Turkish with English subtitles. Directed by Anne Zohra Berrached. With Canan Kir, Roger Azar, Özay Fecht, Jana Julia Roth, Ceci Chuh, Nicolas Chaoui.
