IN BETWEEN WORLDS

Jesper is a soldier in the German armed forces, and although his brother died while serving in Afghanistan, he signs up for duty in the war-torn land again. He is to protect an isolated village from the Taliban, together with his unit. One of Jesper’s aides is the young Afghan interpreter Tarik, whose responsibilities include facilitating communication between the soldiers and the village community.

Both sides find it hard to bridge the differences in their way of life. Jesper, who must win the trust of the farmers and the allied Arbaki militia, soon feels at his wit’s end. The conflicts of conscience, triggered by the orders of his superiors, gradually pile up. When Tarik’s life is threatened because of his proximity to the Germans, and he begins to fear for his sister’s life too, Jesper is forced to make a decision.

The film was shot on site in Kunduz and Mazar-i-Sharif, as well as at different locations in Germany in German, English, Dari and Pashto. IN BETWEEN WORLDS celebrated its world premiere at the 2014 Berlin International Film Festival as one of the films selected for the competition.
