Theories and Practices of Spatial Commoning in Berlin, Athens, and Thessaloniki
Places that are created and maintained together are essential for a democratic society in which no one is excluded. The event and workshop series
“Commons City” invites you to a
four-day exchange of relevant strategies, models, and tools for spatial commoning and concrete participation in communal urban life.
It begins at the Goethe-Institut Thessaloniki on
Thursday, 17 October 2019, from 6.30 to 9.30 p.m., with an introduction to the event and workshop series and a film screening of Nicolas Humbert’s
Wild Plants (2016)—a story about people and projects that create sustainable living spaces in Detroit, South Dakota, Zurich and in the vicinity of Geneva—followed by a discussion with the audience.
On Friday, 18 October 2019, from 6.30 to 9.30 p.m., the Goethe-Institut Thessaloniki will also host a discussion with Eleftheria Gavriilidou (Thessaloniki) and Mathias Heyden, Ines Schaber, and Florian Wüst (Berlin), which will provide insight into forms of artistic activist publishing and democratizing cooperation between civil society, policy makers, and administrative staff in Berlin’s urban planning. The subsequent discussion with Stavros Stavrides (Athens) will deal with the principles and potentials of urban commoning.
On Saturday, 19 October 2019, and Sunday, 20 October 2019, from 11.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m., the makers, users, and residents of
Kipos3, which was initiated in 2014, and anyone interested in the topic are invited to a workshop in the neighbourhood garden to discuss the possible design of the site as an urban commons. The workshop is also aimed at people who want to document this exchange in written or visual form to facilitate [SC2] communication in the neighbourhood and with other community gardens in Thessaloniki.
