Foreword

Is there a female gaze in art?

Six female artists from Berlin and Leipzig have been invited to share their gaze with us. In their paintings and sculptures, they explore body images and sensuality, address relationships and memories, and question traditional as well as contemporary gender roles.

The 26 selected artworks are strong, as diverse as they are humorous, and result in a kaleidoscope of female identities that confidently confronts the gaze of our world.

For this exhibition, five female painters and one sculptress from Berlin and Leipzig were selected, some of whom can be assigned to the environment of the so-called New Leipzig School. All of the artists involved here have been honored with solo exhibitions and prizes and have been shown internationally.

For Hong Kong, this selection of representative female positions of contemporary art from Germany is a premiere.

As one of the program highlights for the 60th anniversary of the Goethe-Institut in Hong Kong, the exhibition THE FEMALE GAZE will open on March 21, 2023 during Art Basel Hong Kong and will then be on view at the gallery of the Goethe-Institut Hongkong until May 13.

My sincere thanks go to Tanja Selzer of the MalerinnenNetzWerk Berlin-Leipzig for the trustful collaboration in the coordination and organization, and to all participating artists for their unfailing dedication, as well as to Dr. Harald Kraemer, University Museum and Art Gallery, The University of Hong Kong, for his curatorial advice.

Dr. Almuth Meyer-Zollitsch
Director of Goethe-Institut Hongkong
