Das Archipel & Arum Dayu in Cemeti Artist-in-Residency program

Cemeti Institute

From September to November 2017, the Goethe-Institut Indonesia, in cooperation with Cemeti – Institute for Art and Society, gives a German artist the opportunity to spend three months in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, together with an Indonesian artist.

The Residency Program encourages an open process of research and knowledge exchange by bringing together local artists, craftsmen, curators, academics, as well as various institutions throughout Yogyakarta. The guiding idea of the residence is to encourage and support artists to interact directly with local communities and to deal with central issues of the local context and beyond.
 
Cemeti’s team will act as a discussion partner throughout a weekly “Breakfast Club” for the resident artists to share their interests, questions and concerns. During the course of their stay, the artists-in-residence will be asked to participate in several public events. This includes Kamar Tokek (“gecko room”); an occasional platform for artist in residence to share anything from films, books, artworks, recipes and ideas. The residency will culminate in a final presentation, which can take the form of an exhibition, performance, lecture, workshop or any other format that corresponds to the artists’ work and practice.
 
Das Archipel

Das Archipel (2015) consists of Finn Brüggemann and Nuriye Tohermes.

Finn Brüggemann (*1988) lives and works in Hamburg, Germany. After his BA studies in Liberal Arts and Sciences at Amsterdam University College, he studied with Marjetica Potrč at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg. Since 2011, he realized several community-building projects, amongst others in Serbia, Hamburg, South Africa, and the USA. In 2015, he co-founded Das Archipel, a swimming platform, a community organized public space, and a schoolroom for social and political action. He graduated with a Master of fine arts in 2016. He works on the threshold of politics, community, and art. His work aims to create forms of collective organization in reaction to local and global crises.

Nuriye Elisabeth Tohermes (*1989) lives and works in Hamburg. She studied Fine Arts and Social Design at HFBK Hamburg. Since 2012, she conceptualizes and realizes participatory and site-specific works, for example a community-organized public space in Soweto, South Africa; the Silent Lunch Discussions for the New Museum in New York, USA, or a conference on collaboration in Tromsø, Norway, in cooperation with UniGrowCity. She is one of the co-founders of Das Archipel.

Arum Dayu
 
Arum Tresnaningtyas Dayuputri (*1984) lives and works in Bandung. She started her career as a photojournalist in Kompas Daily and received her diploma in photojournalism from Ateneo de Manila University in 2012. She has been part of several exhibitions, workshops, and residency programs in Indonesia and abroad. She initiated a learning space called Kami Punya Cerita at Tobucil and Klabs, Bandung, where anyone who has an interest in and passion for photography can share their ideas and experiences. Together with some friends, Arum currently runs Omnispace, an alternative space in Bandung. She loves to sing and play the ukulele and has a music project called Tetangga Pak Gesang with Meicy Sitorus.
