Open discussion sessions in an unconference-style

In NGOPI.2, moderators Yori Papilaya (Rakarsa) and Ardhana Riswarie (art teacher and researcher, ITB) open a conversation about multiple challenges of sustainability of (artist) collectives in terms of organization and management, relationships and negotiations. Sustainability in this sense refers not only to the temporality of collectives but also to the dynamics between individual members; how to find and shape one's own role, how to participate. How can the interdependence between members and the collective be described and designed? How can the collective use the abilities and possibilities of the individual members as a motor? In the impulses, Dwihandono Ahmad, curator and former member of the Gerilya Artist Collective, and the artist Arya Sudrajat from Jelekong give insights into their own experiences and reflect on them.

In relation to preventing the spread of Covid-19, Ngopi.2 will be implemented virtually through Zoom.

The bi-monthly Ngopi series is part of Rubicon, a cultural initiative by the Goethe-Institut Bandung, Institut Français d’Indonési Bandung and Rakarsa Foundation that unfolds throughout the whole year of 2021. Ngopi seeks to further explore the collaborative experiences of local artistic/creative/activist actors in their creative process as well as challenges, obstacles and potentials of working collectively on current issues in the city of Bandung. Consisting of nine open discussion sessions in an unconference-style, each Ngopi presents discussion triggers – inputs by local experts and practitioners – which result in an open discussion and fluid conversation with the audience-participants. The Ngopi series will emphasize three main topics: collective identity and diversity, environment and sustainability, and social justice and empowerment in our shared urban space. With these informal yet in-depth conversations we seek to build the ground for the next stages of the overall project.

Rubicon is produced in partnership with Rakarsa Foundation, the Goethe-Institut Bandung and the Institut Français d’Indonésie IFI Bandung, and supported by the German-Franco Cultural Fund. The project consists of a series of unconferences, a hackathon, and a final exhibition in December 2021.

Yori Papilaya is currently active as a financial officer for arts management at ArtSociates, Bandung. He also illustrates, writes, designs and is part of the Rakarsa Foundation.

Ardhana Riswarie (Ari) is a lecturer and researcher at the Faculty of Art and Design ITB. As an art therapist with a focus on children's mental and emotional development, she is also experienced in community arts therapy.

Jelekong based artist Arya Sudrajat seeks to share his artistic references with the world of contemporary art outside of Jelekong, with the hope to enrich the repertoire of visual arts in Indonesia in general, or in Bandung in particular. Arya is currently the deputy chairman of Gurat, an art collective of painters in Jelekong.
