18.12.2021 - 23.01.2022

The first edition of GoetheKonter—a rhizomatic, collaborative project by Goethe-Institut Bandung and Indeks, will present works by Fefia Suh, Nidiya Kusmaya, and Sabiq Hibatulbaqi who were previously participated in the Artists’ Takeover Schwebezustand Project.

The first edition of GoetheKonter will challenge artistic possibilities once explored through the “Artists Takeover – Schwebezustand” project by inviting three artists previously involved in it: Fefia Suh, Nidiya Kusmaya, and Sabiq Hibatulbaqi. In September, the artists had conducted their experimentation by responding to the theme “Schwebezustand” which can be translated as “The In-between State” or “The State of Uncertainty”. This time, the artists will show their work in each venue from 18 December 2021 – 23 January 2022.

The GoetheKonter project will kick off with three different venues for five weeks accompanied by public engagement activities, such as neighborhood walking tours, bike tours, and audio guides to learn more about the artworks and where the showcases are located. Locations include a famous street near one of the oldest art schools in Bandung, the diner around the main train station, and a neighborhood where there was once an internment camp during the Japanese occupation period.

GoetheKonter is a rhizomatic, collaborative project by Goethe-Institut Bandung and Indeks designed to introduce artistic practices to a broad audience by creating portable micro galleries as glass boxes measuring no more than 80 x 40 x 40 cm to be distributed around Bandung as temporary exhibitions. The “Konter” part of the project name stems from Indeks curatorial project “Galeri Konter”; the Indonesian term “Konter” means “showcase” (noun) and “to counter” (verb). The project provides an opportunity for art practitioners to work with different presentation formats, contextualize their artistic concept to the surroundings, and engage a wider audience with different demographic backgrounds.

The venues can be visited during operation hours. Compliance with each venue’s health regulations is required.

Fefia Suh is an artist based in Bandung. She graduated with a BA in Ceramic Art and she sculpts. Fefia values the intimacy artists share with the materials they are working with and considers every artwork a vessel filled with the artist inside resonating the soul of the vessel. She has recently been exploring the idea of eco-feminism and working with different media while still exploring ceramic-making methods: the cycle of nature, the transformation of frail materials into strong sculptural works.

Nidiya Kusmaya is a textile artist and researcher who works with a variety of textile materials and natural dyeing methods that can be applied to art installations and products. She is currently researching combining kitchen waste and other uncommon materials such as micro fungus and bacteria as colorants for textiles that are environmentally friendly. Through her research she hopes to extend the food chain into clothing material.

Sabiq Hibatulbaqi is a Bandung-based artist who explores books, pictorial panels, and other things that have a sequential quality. Sabiq generally renders sequential presentations that recreate the experience to be absorbed (either literally or symbolically) and recounted to the public or in spatial iteration. Sabiq’s works have been exhibited at RUBANAH Underground Hub Jakarta, Lawangwangi Creative Space, and several of his projects have been presented in other art spaces in Bandung and Yogyakarta.

Initiated in February 2020, Indeks has three main objectives: to trace back the development of the art ecosystem in Bandung, to fill the role as an independent research center and a crowd-sourced archiving platform, and to cultivate dialogues and promote knowledge exchange among art practitioners. Indeks’ focus is on archives and libraries, research and development, artist residencies, film and moving image programs. They recently worked with the British Council and the Japan Foundation, and they co-curated an exhibition at Museum MACAN Jakarta.
