Hardly any twentieth century German cultural figure is as famous or as controversial as Joseph Beuys (1921 – 1986), a performance artist, sculptor, graphic artist, art theorist and one-time professor. In his fast-paced and intelligent collage of countless images and audio documents, many of them previously unseen, the director Andres Veiel paints a picture of this unique man and artist whose restless creativity knew no bounds. Beuys is no conventional portrait; rather it is an intimate study of the man, his art and his ideas – stirring, provocative and astoundingly present. Beuys’ broad understanding of art takes him right to the heart of social debates that continue to be of relevance today.

Beuys by Andres Veiel is a wonderful documentary as well as a complete, instructive and respectful portrait of an important artist – who was always a sensation

Discussion with Erik Pauhrizi after the film screening

Beuys was an artist, politician and also a lecturer. One of his interesting statements is the famous quote "Jeder Mensch ist ein Künstler" (everyone is an artist). In the talk, Erik Pauhrizi discusses this statement within the context of the Indonesian art scenes and the role of art schools in Indonesia.

Erik Pauhrizi (born 1981 in Bandung, Indonesia) has been living and working as an artist in Bandung since 2017 and is a lecturer at the Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN) Film Studies Program.

Erik completed his Meisterschüler study under Prof. Michael Brynntrup (experimental video / film art class) and Prof. Dörte Eißfeldt (photography class) from Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig / HBK in Germany. In 2005, he received a Bachelor's degree from the Faculty of Art and Design from the Institut Teknologi Bandung with the title of Cum Laude.

Erik's works focus on issues of post colonialism and decolonization through a conceptual approach. He often utilizes photography, video / film, and object / installations to analyze how human figures are represented in political culture.
