German films as far as the eye can see – in mid-October it will be that time of the year again. For the fifth edition of German Cinema, we’re bringing selected German films to cinemas from Jakarta to Bali. More than 15 ambitious and fascinating productions from 2016 and 2015 have made it onto this year’s festival programme and paint an impressive picture of the contemporary film scene in Germany.

The programme features established filmmakers such as Doris Dörrie, whose latest production Fukushima, mon amour (Grüße aus Fukushima) uses haunting black and white images to tell a touching story about the ghosts of the past, as well as young productions eager to try something new, such as Sebastian Schipper’s unexpectedly successful film Victoria that caused quite a sensation in the German film scene when it was released. Shot in a single continuous take, Victoria takes the audience on a thrilling real-time ride through Berlin at night.

The festival presents German Cinema at its very best: we experience strong, fragile, smart and funny women coping with the trials and tribulations of their daily lives amid disasters large and small, or whose lives – and with them reality itself – are coming apart at the seams. We see men who despair of the system but keep fighting nonetheless, who face each new blow that fate deals them with renewed courage. And more than once we the audience find ourselves experiencing as if at first hand the difficulties of making one’s way as a young person growing up in a paradoxical world.

German Cinema is coming to Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Denpasar and Makassar in 2016, offering great movies, powerful stories (some of which are set against a genuine historical backdrop), big emotions, inspiration and outstanding aesthetic quality.

The full programme will be posted here and on www.goethe.de/germancinema in around mid-September.

We’re looking forward to welcoming you to German Cinema 2016!
