The performance group She She Pop is one of the most interesting and at the same time most unique formations in the German theater landscape. It was founded in 1998 by several graduates of the Institute for Applied Theatre Studies in Giessen. She She Pop aims to defy the often hierarchical structures of theatre and instead develop productions as a collective.

She She Pop – meanwhile also including one male member – gained worldwide fame with its production Testament. Based on Shakespeare’s King Lear, the actors deal with the relationships with their fathers who as essential part of the play also appear on stage.

The group’s production The Rite of Spring - as performed by She She Pop and their mothers however focuses on the mothers who – contrary to the fathers – are not physically on stage but as larger-than-life video projections. The basis for this production was Igor Strawinski’s Le Sacre du Printemps – or The Rite of Spring, in which a young girl is sacrificed to appease to the God of Spring. The premiere of this play over 100 years ago caused a scandal. However, it wasn’t so much the archaic ritual murder that caused the uproar – it was instead the music. Instead of soft and delightful melodies, the audience was presented with harsh sounds and rhythms. At the time, this was considered outrageous and downright revolutionary.

She She Pop’s The Rite of Spring probably won’t cause protests at the present age, but it still deals with a controversial topic: What kind of sacrifices do women make for society and family? Instead of a ritual sacrifice, She She Pop’s performance focuses on renunciation – between man and woman as well as mother and daughter.
