In Germany, numerous German-language literary works of various genres are published every year. These literary works have succeeded in penetrating the international book markets and have been translated into other languages of the world, which signficantly impacted the spread of German literature in many countries.
According to the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchandels (the German Publishers and Booksellers Association), in 2019 German publishers sold 7,747 right licenses for books abroad to be translated into more than 100 languages (source: Goethe-Institut Literature Report).
Readers in Indonesia also gets the chance to enjoy and delve into a number of German literary works in Indonesian that have already been published by some local publishers. Then what role do translators and translations of German literary works play in Indonesia? How many works have been translated directly from German into Indonesian? Can the profession of translator of literary works in general and German literature in particular attract the Generation Z and Millennials?
In this talk show, Dr. Lilawati Kurnia, Kartini Nurdin, Wedha Stratesti Yudha and Hendarto Setiadi will discuss about the translation of German literature into Indonesian in Indonesia from a different perspective.

PROF. DR. LILAWATI KURNIA M.A.
teaches at German Department and Cultural Studies Postgraduate Programme at the Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Indonesia. She got her PhD at the Faculty of Humanities, UI in 2000, and Her Magistra Artium from Gesamthochschule Kassel, Germany in 1990. Her interest and research includes popular culture, transculturality, comparative literature, Batiks and translation. She has translated several books.
HENDARTO SETIADI
is born and raised in Bonn, Germany (West). He has more than 30 years of experience in the field of translation and has produced more than 100 books. In 2019, he participated in the Social Translating Project initiated by South Korea's Goethe-Institut and translated Judith Schalansky's Verzeichnis einiger Verluste. The Indonesian edition of the book was published by the Indonesian Obor Library Foundation in 2020 under the title An Inventory of Losses.
KARTINI NURDIN
was a correspondent for APPREB, 2008-2009, Asia Pacific Cultural Center for Unesco (ACCU), Japan in the field of copyright. She has been involved in publishing for more than 35 years and has participated in various trainings and workshops in publishing in America, India, Japan, Germany and Korea.
Currently, she is the Chairperson Yayasan Pustaka Obor Indonesia, a publishing house that publishes works important to Indonesia and collaborates with various parties. In addition, Kartini Nurdin is the Chairperson of the Indonesian Copyright Reproduction Association, a collective management in the field of literacy that promotes and protects copyrighted works both in Indonesia and abroad.
WEDHA STRATESTI YUDHA
is the foreign rights manager for Gramedia International with over 13 years of experience in publishing industry. Gramedia International acts as an agent for seven publishing houses in Kompas Gramedia Group of Publishers, which publish approximately 5,000 new titles annually. Her responsibility is to manage the relationships of their publishers with the overseas publishers for business purposes.
