30 years ago, on 28 August 1995, Michael Ende (1929–1995) passed away. With Jim Button, Momo, and The NeverEnding Story, he created timeless classics of children’s and young adult literature. His works have been translated into over 40 languages worldwide and are still cherished by readers today, just as they were when first written in the 1960s and 1970s. His stories appeal not only to children and youth, but also to adult readers. The author was awarded the German Children’s Literature Award twice. His works have been adapted into films, puppet shows, theatre productions, and operas.
To mark the 30th anniversary of Michael Ende’s passing, the Goethe-Institut Jakarta Library presents an exhibition showcasing the life and work of Michael Ende, one of the first German-language authors to explore the fantasy genre. The exhibition was curated by the International Youth Library in Munich.
The exhibition features rich illustrations that trace key moments in Michael Ende’s life and career. It offers a vivid look at his growth as a writer and his most significant works.
In addition to the exhibition, a range of other events will take place at Perpustakaan Jakarta & Pusat Dokumentasi Sastra H.B. Jassin, Jakarta:
- Film screenings
- Book discussion of The NeverEnding Story in collaboration with Gramedia Pustaka Utama
