The best and inspiring photobooks from Germany, Indonesia and Japan

The printed photo book as 'visual narrative' is experiencing an upswing in the digital age. This is just seemingly a contradiction. New program for image design and layout extend the creative possibilities of the photographers. Digital methods enable high-quality printouts in small runs and make it easier than ever to create a photo book.
The printed photobook shows not only individual pictures, but conveys the concept to the photographer. It is giving permanence to the volatile single object and a range beyond the temporary exhibition.

Through Pameran Buku Fotografi 2016 Goethe-Institut shows the best and inspiring photobooks from Germany, Indonesia and Japan. In the year 2016, almost 200 titles were submitted in the annual Deutsches Fotobuchpreis (German Photobook Award). A panel of judges selected 22 as a victory title in various categories. This selection is accompanied by the best photo books from Indonesia, selected by an independent jury. This selection is organized by PannaFoto Institute, the official Indonesian partner of the photobook exhibition. Japan Foundation (the Japanese Culture Institute) contributes a selection of inspiring Japanese photobooks. The photo exhibition will also present the book "The Riders of Destiny" by photographer Romi Perbawa, which has been published by Afterhours Books.
