Artist-in-Residency Nusasonic - Crossing Aural Geographies

As part of the multi-year project Nusasonic, which aims to strengthen the networks of contemporary experimental sound and music cultures in Southeast Asia, Europe and beyond, Berlin-based Jessica Ekomane and Cairo’s Nadah El Shazly take part in a residency program in Yogyakarta. Hosted by Nusasonic-partner Yes No Klub during their stay from July to September 2019, both artists will research on Indonesian traditional and contemporary music, learn about current cultural and artistic practices through discussions and workshops with local artists and communities, and produce new works.

Jessica Ekomane is a sound artist and electronic musician based in Berlin. Her musical work is influenced by diverse aspects of acoustic perception: e.g. the manifestation of sound in space, psychoacoustics or the use of complex musical structures such as polyrhythms. For the residency in Yogyakarta, she strives to deepen her engagement with the music and art scenes of Indonesia, as well as to conduct a research about the vocabulary of local music traditions.

Nadah El Shazly is a singer and composer living and working in Cairo. She released her critically acclaimed debut album AHWAR in Nov 2017. Backing up her release with extensive worldwide touring through a solo set and a four-piece band, El Shazly has been featured in local and international festivals including Le Guess Who?, REWIRE, Best Kept Secret, Supersonic and many more. She continues to compose for film and visual art. During the residency she would like to write new music based on fieldwork recordings done in Indonesia. Intrigued by the independent movement and ethics of art collectives in Yogyakarta, she also plans to exchange with local artists to pursue her art collective movement in Cairo.
