The aim to refine the entire industrialized world "from the sofa cushion to urban development" (Hermann Muthesius) from an artistic point of view and to "educate" the populace with "well"-formed objects defined the German Werkbund’s work until the last third of the 20th century. When today’s businesses strive for uniform appearance, a Corporate Identity, and when there is world-wide understanding about designing industrial products and "industrial design" is taught at universities, developed by international companies and exhibited in museums, then this is to a very great extent to the credit of the Deutscher Werkbund.

The exhibition "100 Years German Werkbund“ will present this important chapter of German cultural and economic history of the 20th century. Posters, models, furniture, design, drawings, and photos vividly show the achievements of the German Werkbund.

About German Werkbund

In October 1907, twelve artists and architects, including Peter Behrens, Josef Hoffmannn, and Richard Riemerschmid, along with twelve Munich firms, joined to form the German Werkbund. The founder members defined the purpose of the Werkbund as "refining craft work in the interaction of art, industry, and craft, by education, by propaganda, and by adopting a unified approach to all relevant questions".

The German Werkbund turned to the subjects of "overdevelopment" and "environmental" destruction at its conference on "Die grosse Landzerstörung" (The Great Destruction of the Land) in 1959 in Marl, thus providing the first decisive impetus for developing public awareness of ecology and the consequences of unbridled economic growth. The Werkbund now increasingly switched its interest from questions of production to problems of consumption: not "good form" any longer, but the correct way to handle products and the consequences of consumption in an "attitude community" moving to become an "action community", which still seems prescient and stimulating today.

This exhibition aims to gather the works and knowledge of selected product designers in Indonesia who have a history of working together with the community. All exhibition materials (objects, infographics, archives, documentation, etc.) are displayed in a timeline format that tries to trace the development of community-oriented product design practices in Indonesia from the 1970s to the present.

These designers left their comfort zone by working in remote regions and areas, carrying out collaborative and participatory design practices with the local residents. Instead of just being designers, they also became facilitators encouraging the exchange of knowledge and skills. The practice of design is also articulated to stimulate discussion among citizens, which results in the growth of literacy and awareness for the common good. This exhibition aims to provide an understanding that collective work with citizens / communities can provide inspiration for design practices and process creations. Collective work is then able to initiate new behaviors in the community that trigger integration and social cohesion.

Common Good(s) is presented by Selasar Sunaryo Art Space and the Goethe-Institut Bandung in response to the exhibition 100 Years German Werkbund 1907|2017.
