Catch Lala’s story and thoughts on Germany and Indonesian fairy tale
Lala Bohang had just returned from her first international residency in Germany when the COVID-19 case broke out in Indonesia in early March. For her upcoming work she collected research data on how the social construction of women in Germany and Indonesia was formed through fairy tales.
Why are fairy tales important to Lala? What are the big narratives of Indonesian and German fairy tales? Also, how are they recorded? How did Lala experience the residencies? What did she find in Germany?
This talk is part of the
BINGKIS series, a new Goethe-Institut Indonesien initiative that focuses on the perspectives of art practitioners concerning the changes and challenges they faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is broadcast live every two weeks on Thursday night via Goethe-Institut social media channels.

Lala Bohang loves to observe and explore intimate personal stories, routines and mundane things which are often overlooked. Her ability to create a certain style of storytelling through text and drawing led her to publish several best-selling illustrated books. In 2013 she held a solo exhibition in LIR Space, Yogyakarta, and in 2016 Lala made
The Museum of Forbidden Feelings, a fictional museum inspired by her book of the same title.
Lala also has participated in group exhibitions in Indonesia and abroad. She has shared her thoughts at art and literacy conferences and festivals such as the Asean Literary Festival, Ideafest, Makassar International Writers Festival, Bandung Readers Festival, and Ubud Writers & Readers Festival.
