How can we make the “New Normality” more sustainable? COVID-19 changes everything, questions existing systems, and amplifies already long-smoldering social and ecological crises. The question emerges whether COVID-19 can also serve as a catalyst for generating a different kind of economic activity and production and, above all, what the role of creative industries might be?
In Instagram Live, Rendy Aditya Wachid, founder of Parongpong, describes his vision of sustainable economy as a kind of ecosystem that uses resources again and again and transforms them into things and objects we need. New raw material resources would not be used up and waste would no longer exist. For the sustainable entrepreneur, what we regard as garbage is an abundance of materials that are not optimally used and therefore wasted. As an example of how each of us can use everyday disposable items as valuable resources and even develop creative business models from them, he presents the project “Cigarette Butt for Human Butt”. The Parongpong team collects cigarette butts, which are then used as basic materials for the production of benches and building materials.
For Library Talks, the Goethe-Institut Bandung invites local partners from different sectors of the creative industries as well as GLAM institutions (galleries, libraries, archives, museums) to talk about current issues and challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. The dialogues with discussion afterwards take place every third Saturday as Instagram Live on @goetheinstitut_bandung.
Rendy Aditya Wachid is an Indonesian architect, project manager and entrepreneur. He is best known as the founder of Parongpong Recycle and Waste Management, co-owner of Burgreens Bandung, and the General Manager of the Rumah Stroberi organic farm. He specializes in start-up business and project management while focusing on sustainability, social entrepreneurship and creative industries.
