Biography:

Described by Gilles Peterson as “The best DJ I’ve heard in 10 years” and having been personally invited by Grace Jones to DJ in her hotel room are not normal accolades for most DJs. But Dea Barandana is no ordinary DJ. As Gilles Peterson put it: “He’s built an entire set around a sound that never sounded better to my ears”.

Born in Jakarta, in the 80s, Dea grew up with the sound of Indonesian city pop and new wave. Although his parents forced him to learn classical piano, he soon developed a taste for many other instruments. Fast forward to 2005. He began picking up gigs across Europe and then returned to Asia to play at the Shelter in Tokyo. In 2012 he returned to his native Indonesia, where he used his skills not only as a DJ but also as a highly ambitious sound designer. He has created the islands only audiophile space Studio Eksotika featuring an incredible, painstakingly sourced array of vintage analog speakers where he showcases the vinyl he has dug out of every corner of the planet.

Defining what Dea plays defeats the object of his mission. There are no genres, no hype tunes. It’s one man sharing his love of the obscure with the dance floor.

Young Amir, or Rafi Muhammad, has been involved in the music scene since he 7 was years old. Aside from drums, he’s also explored other instruments - from piano to contrabass.

At the tender age of 7 he released a debut album Can’t Stop the Beat in 2006. The album was produced by the renowned Harvey Mason and featured jazz stars such as Bo James, Tom Scott, Paul Jackson Jr., Nathan East and Vann Johnson, who performed the vocals in the Bengawan Solo track.

In addition to his solo projects, Young Amir is a familiar collaborator with leading Indonesian musicians, such as Indra Lesmana, Barry Likumahuwa, Adra Karim, Sri Hanuraga, and more. Projects LLW, Rafi and the Beat, Art of Tree, Her Coat of Arms, and Zatua testify to his incredibly rich journey so far in the music world.
