Gerhard Richter - Painting

Gerhard Richter - Painting
(c) ZERO ONE FILM

Dir.: Corinna Belz, colour, 101 mins., Germany 2009-2011

The Model, Sligo

Gerhard Richter is one of today’s most critically acclaimed artists. In the summer of 2009, while working on a series of large abstract paintings, he opened his studio for director Corinna Belz. The film, Gerhardt Richter Painting, grants unique insights into the artist’s work. Calm and highly focused shots allow us to become immersed into his very personal and interesting creative process. We watch Richter painting, observing and evaluating his art; how he communicates with the painting, how he contemplates, waits, revises, sometimes even destroys and restarts his work. With her film, Corinna Belz attemps to grasp the multilayered process of creative work. The view on the canvas expands and changes. The paintings themselves become protagonists. Gerhardt Richter Painting is a portrait of an artist at work – and a fascinating film about the act of observing.
