Enhancing STEM student employability through foreign language learning

UCD, A&L Goodbody Theatre

The conference will address the future skill needs of students after Brexit and at a time of decreasing student numbers taking a foreign language in HE.

This conference is organized by EUNIC members, in cooperation with business and HE bodies and includes presentations, panel discussions and workshops.

Where: UCD, Belfied Campus, Sutherland School of Law, A&L Goodbody Theatre

When: Thursday 24th May 2018

Time: 9.00am-4.00pm

The changing political and economic situation in the world (Brexit, USA, increasing nationalism) requires a re-evaluation of Irish education to ensure graduates have a broad range of skills for the evolving world.  Ireland is uniquely exposed to a wide range of economic consequences which require new approaches. Also in light of the recently published Strategy for Foreign Languages of the Department of Education and Skills, the objective of the conference is to examine this situation and propose actions which could support diversification and the search for new markets as called for by the government, Enterprise Ireland, IBEC and other bodies. A deeper knowledge of European Affairs along with languages and intercultural understanding can help businesses diversify and enter new EU markets.

The conference objective is to make the case for revisiting the HE curriculum in the light of the future orientation of Irish business and industry arising from the impact of major economic, social and political changes. The aim is to promote the teaching of FLs across disciplines, assess their value and   present some initiatives which successfully address the provision of languages in HE in an era of changed institutional priorities and severe funding cuts.

Speakers will address the issues in a series of presentations in plenary and panel format in the morning.  Parallel workshops in the afternoon will offer participants the opportunity to engage on topics in greater depth with educators and European companies and to consider possible future actions.
