Voices of Memory. A Riverside Sound Art Installation at the Irish National War Memorial Gardens by the internationally renowned sound artist Christina Kubisch is a contemporary remembrance of the more than 49,000 Irish people who died in the First World War. In 1923, these names were published in Ireland’s Memorial Records 1914-1918. Consisting of eight volumes, these records, beautifully designed and illustrated by Irish artist Harry Clarke, are housed nearby in the Irish National War Memorial Gardens.

In 2016 almost the entire list of these names was read by volunteers of different ages and accents from across Ireland.  The sound installation is based on the flow of these male and female voices playing over the banks of the river. The names are heard in alphabetical order, and every name, even when repeated, corresponds to a different person. The installation was inaugurated on the 29 June 2016 on the occasion of the centenary of the Battle of the Somme and is currently in its final year.

Following on from this, you are warmly invited to join the Goethe-Institut Irland, Dublin City Council and Farpoint Recordings in launching the ‘Voices of Memory’ CD by Christina Kubisch on 20 June 2018 at 6pm in the City Walls Space in Dublin. Guest Speaker will be Bernard Clarke, RTÉ Lyric FM. The Voices Of Memory CDs by Christina Kubisch are a new iteration of the sound installation. The double CD's are mounted into a full colour card gatefold sleeve and includes a twenty page booklet with photography and colour images throughout. There are essays and notes by Christina Kubisch, Thomas Lier, Ruairí Ó Cuív and Nicola Gordon Bowe. The artistic concept for Voices Of Memory is by Christina Kubisch, sound engineering and technical directon by Eckehard Güther, voice recordings by Fergus Kelly and technical advice by Manfred Fox.

For those who would like to also visit the sound installation itself, it is currently open to the public in the Irish National War Memorial Gardens on the southern banks of the Liffey on a daily basis until November 2018.
