Opera: Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and Opera Collective Ireland present Monteverdi’s “The Return of Ulysses”

Opera Collective Ireland has joined forces with Kilkenny Arts Festival to present The Return of Ulysses, Claudio Monteverdi’s magnificent retelling of Homer’s Odyssey featuring the renowned Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin. The production which opened recently to great acclaim as part of the 2018 Kilkenny Arts Festival will transfer to the Pavilion Theatre, Dún Laoghaire for two performances on 7 & 8 September.
 
OCI and Kilkenny Arts Festival were delighted to welcome to Ireland early-music superstar ensemble Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin which began as a courageous display of musical sovereignty against the East German socialist regime. Now, over thirty years later, the Akademie enjoys recognition as one of Europe’s greatest musical success stories. The ensemble has received numerous awards for its recordings including the Cannes Festival Award, the French Diapason d’Or, the Dutch Edison Award, the British Gramophone Award, the Telemann Prize, as well as a Grammy Award nomination.
 
This production is the first ever professional staging in Ireland of one of the greatest baroque operas and Monteverdi’s magnificent music finds a perfect creative match in the human drama of Homer’s Odyssey. This production brings together a world-class creative team led by Tony Award-winning director Patrick Mason and conductor Christian Curnyn. The production also showcases Ireland’s finest operatic talent of the younger generation.
 
Pre-performance talks by Dr. Antonio Cascelli at 7pm presented in association with the Goethe-Institut Irland.
