Kukolka

For the eleventh international meeting on 11 October, we have invited the author Lana Lux to read her book Kukolka with us.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Ukraine, 90s. A big celebration of freedom. Some dance and eat on top of the rubble heap of the Soviet Union, others are still trying to climb it. Samira among them. At the age of seven she set out in search of freedom and prosperity. While expensive cars decorate the streets, Samira lives with a few other kids in a house where there is no electricity, no hot water, and no toilet. But she's fine. She has her own sofa to sleep on and an almost adult friend who teaches her everything. She also has a job and she does it well: begging. Nobody can resist this beautiful kid, including Rocky. He calls her Kukolka, little doll. If Kukolka massages him long enough, he'll even give her chocolate. Everything seems to be perfect. But Samira is sticking to her dream of Germany. And her dream will come true, come what may. Lana Lux has written a mercilessly realistic novel about exploitation, violence, and harassment, about a life on the fringes of society, led by a heroine who, despite everything, could not be more colorful.
