EUROPE DAY 2023: EUNIC SHORT SHORTS FROM EUROPE

To celebrate Europe Day on Monday 9 May, EUNIC Ireland (European Union National Institutes for Culture) is delighted to present free screenings of its 2022 Short Shorts from Europe programme in Dublin and online. The films are a selection of European short films from the 10 home countries of the EUNIC Ireland members, spanning the genres of comedy, animation, drama, and documentary. 

The participating countries:
Austria, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Luxembourg, each contributing to a programme of contemporary, cutting-edge filmmaking. Additionally the year’s partners, Cork International Film Festival and TUS Limerick School of Art and Design, will also present short films. The German contribution is the award-winning short film "The Beauty" by Pascal Schelbli (2019).

“Simone et moi, une amitié mécanique”
Dir.: Laurène Dervieux und Maxime Charden, Comedy / Web Series, France 2019, 4'05 Min., English subtitles

For 5 years now, Bahia's (Soukaïna Meflah) brain hasn’t been working properly. Coordination, balance and speech, in short, "it's a mess". So Bahia is forced to team up with Simone, her walker. Together they discover the joys of disability. Both face the most banal situations, discussed in a staggered, humorous, sometimes surreal and always resolutely optimistic way.

Laurène Dervieux uses her witty outlook to write articles for the written press & web. She now writes for Stand-up Comedy with Soukaïna Meflah. Maxime Charden made his debut at Canal+ and created some of its cult programs (“Action Discrète”). Since 2013 he also works with 2P2L on "Cam Clash".

“I Don't Want to Forget Anything”

It’s deathly quiet. Marialena is looking for the poetry book she lost. Bookstores are closed. Marialena wants to know where Magda is. The two sisters are on the phone. They need to remember, to forgive, to say goodbye.

Vaggelio Soumeli studied Business Administration in Athens and Industrial Relations in London. In 2016, having worked for years as a social researcher with a focus on gender equality, she started a new career as a filmmaker. Currently, she is in the post-production of her short film “Phoebe” and writes the screenplay of her first feature film.

“O Ofício Da Ilusão” / “The Art of Delusion"
Dir.: Cláudia Varejão, Documentary, Portugal 2020, 6'Min., English subtitles 

“The Art of Delusion” consists of images from a family archive and sound clips from films. The narrative starts with Flaubert’s Madame Bovary. Based on Ema Paiva's dialogue with her friend and confidant Pedro Lumiares in the film Vale Abraão by Manoel de Oliveira, gender identity is understood as an embodiment of social values.

Cláudia Varejão completed the joint Creativity and Artistic Creation Program of Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the DFFB, São Paulo International Film Academy, and arts school AR.CO. Her short films and documentaries have been presented at several prominent film festivals. Varejão’s work also entails photography and teaching.

“Mi piace Spiderman … e allora?” – “I like Spiderman … so what?”
Dir.: Federico Micali, Drama, Italy 2021, 9', English subtitles 

Cloe is a six-year-old girl with a great passion: Spiderman! For her first school day she chooses the schoolbag of her favourite superhero. However, the discovery of Cloe’s school (and world) stops at a question: Why can’t the girls have a favourite superhero? Why do all the people around her say “It is for boys!”?

Federico Micali (Florence, 1971) debuted in 2001 with the documentary “Genova Senza Risposte” about the G8 summit in Genua, followed by “Firenze Città Aperta” (2002), “Nunca Mais” (2004), “99 Amaranto” (2007) and “L’ultima Zingarata” (2011), a documentary presented at the Venice Film Festival. In 2016 he has directed the documentary “l’Universale”.

“The Beauty”
Dir.: Pascal Schelbli, Animation, Germany 2021, 4'27 Min., English

The Beauty is a poetic journey through a fascinating underwater world, where plastic and nature becomes one. For one breath our concerns and feelings of guilt dissolve between eerily beautiful coral reefs and mysterious depths of the ocean.

Pascal Schelbli is an award-winning director and artist. After completing his studies as a graphic designer, he studied at Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg and worked for different production companies as well as for Swiss television. The animation “The Beauty” is his final project at the Filmakademie.

"Her Song"
Dir.: Éabha Bortolozzo & Jack Kirwan, Animation, Irland 2021, 6'38Min., English

Eve learns of her Grandmother's harrowing history in a Mother & Baby home. Woven through her past is the mythological and misunderstood figure of the Banshee, whose comforting presence inspires the strength she needs to tell her story.

Éabha Bortolozzo and Jack Kirwan are two award winning filmmakers. Their first film “The Usual” was well received and selected to screen at festivals worldwide. Their second film “Her Song” received even more praise than their first, winning the pair their first IFTA. They are working on their next short film.

"We Have One Heart"

After his mother dies, Adam comes across some letters his parents exchanged years ago. This is an opportunity for him to find out more about his father, who he never knew. The juxtaposition of animated drawings and archival material takes us back forty years and enables us to uncover an extraordinary family secret.

Born in Gdańsk in 1989, Katarzyna Warzecha graduated from the Krzysztof Kieślowski Film School in Katowice and the Wajda School & Studio in Warsaw. Her award-winning graduation film, “It’s Really Awesome”, was screened at numerous international festivals. “We Have One Heart” followed in its footsteps – it was presented at 33 international festivals and won numerous prestigious awards.

A clinic offers what you’ve always wanted … for a low price.

Álvaro Carmona (1984, Utrera) is a Spanish director, scriptwriter, musician, comedian and artist. Filmography: Clara (2013); short films: Ruleta (2015); Un mal trago (2015) and El tratamiento (2019); Tv show: Gente hablando (2018).

"Mutatiounen"
Dir.: Govinda Van Maele, Drama, Luxembourg 2021, 10'01Min., English subtitles

A mysterious illness takes hold of Sylvie’s husband Rosch. The next morning he is no longer the same.

Govinda Van Maele is a Luxembourg director born in the Grand Duchy in 1983, as son of Sri Lankan-Belgian parents. His directorial credits include the shorts “Josh” (2007), “A Day in the Open” (2012), and “You Go Ahead” (2013), as well as the documentary “We Might As Well Fail” (2011). His feature debut “Gutland” won Best Film at the “Lëtzebuerger Filmpräis” and was chosen as the Luxembourg candidate for the 2019 Oscars as Best Foreign Language Film.

“Der Besuch” / “The Visit”

A tragicomic story about an old woman, who, to the horror of her son, is cooking up a meal in the middle of the night for her long-deceased friends. Fantasy, dream or reality? What is the difference? When people get old ...

Conrad Tambour studied animation at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg. In 2011 he founded the award-winning animation studio “Neuer Österreichischer Trickfilm” together with Benjamin Swiczinsky and Johannes Schiehsl. Based in Vienna the studio focuses on narrative animated films and the creation of profound, authentic, animated characters for film & television.

“Snooze”
Dir.: Adam Collins, Comedy, Ireland 2021, 5'Min., no dialogue 

A short comedy about sleeping in.

Adam Collins is a writer and director based in Dublin. His previous short “The Box” screened at over 30 festivals worldwide, earning various awards. His newest short “Snooze” was awarded Market Pick at the prestigious Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival. Adam is currently developing a screenplay for his debut feature film.

“Underground Éire”
Regie: Shane Joyce & Corrine Gibbons, Documentary, Ireland 2021, 12' 28Min., English

“Underground Éire” is a visually intimate documentary sharing three underground musicians’ struggles with their art, race, and sense of social belonging. The film follows Owen Alfred, Joyce Zacks and XoLu (Lucas Ryan) as they share both their experiences and music on film.

Shane Joyce is a 20-year-old filmmaker, and a student of Creative Broadcast and Film Production at TUS Limerick School of Art and Design, who started making short films at fifteen in his bedroom. Corinne Gibbons is a 23-year-old filmmaker from Limerick. She studied photography for 2 years before discovering filmmaking.

Presented by the TUS Limerick School of Art and Design in partnership with the Richard Harris International Film Festival.
