Jan Ole Gerster’s debut-feature „A Coffee in Berlin“(original title “Oh Boy”), that swept many German Awards and was also nominated in the category ”European Film” for the European Film Awards 2013 tells the story of Niko (Tom Schilling).
Niko, a twenty-something college dropout lives for the moment as he drifts through the streets of Berlin, curiously observing everyone around him and oblivious to his growing status an outsider. When his girlfriend rebuffs him and his father cuts his financial support everything changes. Unable to ignore the consequences of his passivity, Niko finally concludes that he has to engage with life.
The black and white shots and also the jazz soundtrack give the film its special character and a charm. This drama-comedy gives the love in all its details and is tribute to Berlin.
