Since its inception in 2003, the Dublin International Film Festival (DIFF) has taken place shortly after the Berlinale, this year from 26 February to 8 March. The Goethe-Institut Irland is delighted that once again two films from Germany will be presented at DIFF. This year both films focus on music.

Das Vorspiel / The Audition
Director: Ina Weisse, colour, 99 min., Germany/France 2019
Nina Hoss heads the cast of a drama about a teacher who did not succeed in becoming a famous violinist herself, but works at a music school instead. She takes one of her students under her wing, 12-years old Alexander whom she thinks of as extremely talented. She becomes so obsessed with her pupil that it starts to threaten her career, family and love life. Actor-turned-director Ina Weisse weaves a story of a woman who becomes lost in her obsession and ambition. From that point on her personal life is in decline because she channels all of her energies into getting the best out of her music student.

Lara
Director: Jan-Ole Gerster, colour, 98 min., Germany 2019
German filmmaker Jan-Ole Gerster follows the award-winning "Oh Boy" with this tale of a woman preparing to celebrate her 60th birthday. Her son, whose work as a pianist has long been her focus, is presenting a major recital, but all is not as it seems in the film: Why is the relationship between the mother and her son so distant? Why does the concert take place at the same day as the mother’s birthday? And why is she not invited to her son’s concert? German actress Corinna Harfouch stars in the lead role.

Tickets are available here.

As both films from Germany at DIFF this year focus on the topic of music, the Goethe-Institut Irland is delighted to partner up with the Dublin International Film Festival and the Royal Irish Academy of Music to host a concert in its premises at 37 Merrion Square as part of the festival.
