New German Films on the IFI Schools Platform 2020/2021

The IFI@Schools platform is a new online streaming library for teachers of primary and post-primary education which launched in December 2020. The Irish Film Institute's education initiative gives teachers flexibility and accessibility to film content.

The IFI@Schools 2020/2021 programme offers two new German films: "Too Far Away" ("Zu weit weg"), an award-winning children's film about friendship and envy directed by Sarah Winkenstette, and "A Voluntary Year" ("Das freiwillige Jahr"), a coming-of-age drama directed by Henner Winckler and Ulrich Köhler which has been nomiinated for various Locarno International Film Festival awards.

The Goethe-Institut Irland has developed study guides for both films which are available here.

Beginning her life after finishing school and not wasting away in an East Westphalian province – that is the unspoken demand which single father, Urs (Sebastian Rudolph) has for his daughter Jette (Mai-Britt Klenke). He has got enough on his plate with his incapable brother and the affair with his receptionist. So, all of a sudden, the day of Jette’s departure for her Voluntary Social Year at a Costa Rican hospital is here, but Jette is torn between her first love Mario and her wish to fulfil her father’s expectations. In the end, it’s a missing camera that results in Mario giving Jette a ride to the airport, making her overthink her plans. She decides not to go and together with Mario she hides from her father for days. When Urs finally finds Jette, a difficult process starts for all parties involved and the cards are reshuffled.
