Saša Stanišić to read and discuss his novel
Herkunft with us.
THE BOOK: "Herkunft" ("Where you come from" - English translation due to be published November 2021)
Herkunft is a book about my homelands, in memory and invention. A book about language, working illegally, youth intertwined with many summers. The summer when my grandfather stepped on my grandmother's foot while dancing in such a way that I was almost never born. The summer when I almost drowned. The summer when Angela Merkel opened the borders, which was just like the summer when I fled across many borders to Germany. Herkunft signifies departure from my demented grandmother. While I collect memories, she loses hers. Hefkunft is sad because for me it calls to mind those things which can no longer be had.
THE AUTHOR: Saša Stanišić
Saša Stanišić was born in Višegrad (Yugoslavia) in 1978 and has lived in Germany since 1992. His stories and novels have been translated into over 30 languages and have won numerous awards. Saša Stanišić received, among others, the Leipzig Book Fair Prize for Before the Feast (Vor dem Fest) and most recently the German Book Prize 2019 for Herkunft, as well as the Eichendorff Literature Prize and the Hans Fallada Prize of the City of Neumünster. He lives and works in Hamburg.
Who can participate?
Everyone who wants to read, discover, meet German authors online and share their reading experience with others is welcome.
The conversation will be in German. All participants should have sufficient language skills to read and discuss in German.
