About the Exhibition:

‘Let no one mistake us for the fruit of Violence’ is a collection of expressions from six artists which reflect on prevailing and isolated representations of men, while celebrating gender affinities through collectivity, home, family, and intimacy. The art works focus on gender constructions and patriarchal forms of aggression on bodies more vulnerable.

“All this time I told myself we were born from war — but I was wrong, Ma. We were born from beauty. Let no one mistake us for the fruit of violence—but rather, that violence, having passed through the fruit, failed to spoil it”, Ocean Vuong writes to his mother, in his novel ‘On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous’.

There might be a story about us, an expectation to perform, but it is upon us to re-narrate it, to heal and then present ourselves.

This exhibition presents narratives of how patriarchy asserts what kind of a male is appropriate, and nullifies those who are marginalized. There are experiences of figures trying to fulfill expectations by the society for a man, while in conflict with their own aspirations. We emphasize the role of shared spaces in building kinships where one can be more vulnerable, instead of constantly performing someone with strength and always victorious.

Artists: Anurag Minus Verma, Javed Sultan, Ashfika Rahman, Renuka Rajiv, Sandhip Kuriakose and Tsohil Bhatia

The exhibition includes drawings, paintings, photographs and video art.
