Felicitas Hoppe was born on 22 December, 1960 to a Roman Catholic family in Hameln, Lower Saxony, the third of five children. She moved to Tuebingen near Stuttgart for further studies. After that, she moved to the U.S. and at Oregon, did her degree in German Language, Literature and Religious Studies. She had worked as a poetry lecturer and guest professor in Wiesbaden, Mainz, Augsburg, Goettingen, and Hamburg, as well as at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, and Georgetown University in Washington D.C.
Apart from these, she also taught German as a foreign language at the Goethe Institute and worked as a journalist for some time.
Hoppe’s major works are connected to the fairy tale genre. The first one Picknick der Friseure (Picnic of the Barbers) was published in 1996. In the story, characters beat each other up in comic-strip-style, children suddenly grow red hair, children run away from their parents and from a hostile world.
Her second book, Pigafetta came after her travel around the world in a freight career. The narrator in Pigafetta converses on her voyage with the lingering ghost of Antonio Pigafetta, who accompanied Ferdinand Magellan on the first-ever circumnavigation in 1519-22 and wrote an account of it. In 2008 came Iwein Löwenritter (Yvain, the knight of the Lion), in which Hoppe retold the medieval Arthurian romance Yvain, the knight of the Lion (c. 1200) by Hartmann von Aue for the young readers.
Felicitas Hoppe won the prestigious Georg Büchner Prize in 2012, the most important literary award for German Language books. She has also received the Aspekte Literature Prize of the ZDF, the Ernst-Wilner Prize and the Foglio-Prize for young writers.
Since 1996 Felicitas Hoppe is living as a freelance writer in Berlin.
In her novels, stories and essays, Felicitas Hoppe has explored "the world of the adventurer and the conman, the discoverer and the ne'er-do-well’’. Hoppe’s fiction explores human subjectivity in the form of a voyage, and her characters are almost always on the move. Her work is postmodern in the sense that it is playful, ironic and extremely self-reflective: her fictions continually reflect on their own status as fictional discourses.
Regarding her writing style, she herself feels that hers is a different kind of story telling from the traditional mixture. According to her, it is a way of working with language and seeing what comes out of it. But, her writing is not pure fantasy; it would be better to call it ‘phantasmic’ writing. Explaining herself further, she says: "Everything I write, I get from the world; but, I turn it and infuse an absurd element into my writing. It can at best be called experimental prose. I like playing around with language. The result is neither realistic nor naturalistic prose, but cryptic prose, a strange mix of the comical and the sinister. In my view, literature is certain people's special view of the world."
