The project “German in 1000 Schools” is a flagship project of the Goethe-Institut. The Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan in India in close cooperation with the Kendriya Vidyalayas- a chain of elite government schools with an excellent academic reputation, to offer German as an additional subject.
The visit of the Federal Chancellor Ms. Angela Merkel in October 2015 gave a new impetus to the project.
During her visit both countries signed a Joint letter of Intent that extends support to the teaching of German in Indian schools. The Joint Declaration of Intent also foresees the introduction of Indian languages in schools in Germany.
The cooperation between the Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan and the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan found a special mention in the declaration.
This formal decleration gave a new impetus to the teaching of German in Kendriya Vidyalayas und in 2016 around 250 Kendriya Vidyalayas offered German to their students and over 50000 students are taking advantage of this offer.
The Goethe-Institut supports the teaching of German with teaching material, teacher training programmes and events for students.
