As part of our series Virtual Artistic Exchange 2021, Berlin-based visual artist Matthias Beckmann invites you to participate in I show you my town - a workshop on documentary drawing, in collaboration with 1Shanthiroad Studio/Gallery.

Aim 
The workshop is aimed at students and professionals in the fields of fine arts, architecture, illustration and design to learn how to create exciting graphic reportage by drawing, using visual means that we know from film, story board and comic: sequence of images, change of perspective, zoom, picture of the total scene, detail, etc.

Draw in front of the subject without photographic aids and develop a documentary drawing series about a place that holds a special meaning.
 
Process
In daily zoom meetings, Matthias Beckmann will give suggestions and the course participants can discuss their work. The participants work independently on their series of drawings and receive individual feedback from Matthias Beckmann. They regularly upload their latest drawings via Google drive so that all participants can view their progress.
 
Result/Showcase
Selected results of the workshop will be presented on a website and a series of postcards will be created.
 
Schedule
Matthias Beckmann will select 20 participants for each workshop.
Selected participants can choose between two workshops:
 
Workshop 1: October 18 - 22, 2021
October 18, 11.00 a.m.: First zoom meeting
October 19 till October 22, every day at 5.00 p.m.: zoom meeting/individual work
October 29, 2021, 5.00 p.m.: Final discussion and results
 
Workshop 2: November 8 - 12, 2021
November 8, 11.00 a.m.: First zoom meeting
November 9 till November 12, every day at 5.00 p.m.: zoom meeting/individual work
November 19, 2021, 5.00 p.m.: Final discussion and results

Deadline to submit portfolios: October 12, 2021, 12 midnight.

Matthias Beckmann has been working for many years on documentary drawing series on selected places and topics: German Parliament, Charité Hospital in Berlin, Refugee Housing, Romanesque Churches in Cologne, Vietnamese Life in Berlin, Museums in Berlin, Bonn, Wuppertal, Paris, Ghent, Linz, etc.

His works have been presented in numerous exhibitions and are in the graphic collections of many museums.
