The Young Theatre of the World Congress was born in response to Greta Thunberg's call "Our House is on Fire!". Following Greta's example, the congress aims to bring together 100 young participants from all over the world, aged 16 to 22, from 10 different countries, to provide a platform for addressing issues such as climate change, sustainability and equality.

With the aim of connecting the "global" with the "local", participants will work with experts to develop action plans to save our "house". Our "house", which actually means our planet: – but also our country, our city or our neighborhood in which we live.

In the framework of this congress, the Goethe Institute / Max Mueller Bhavan Kolkata in cooperation with the Junges Schauspieltheater / Dhaus Düsseldorf is organising the following workshops for German Language students of it’s partner schools.

Workshop 1 – "Aus Dem Takt – Portraying Gender Equality through Contemporary Dance“

"Aus Dem Takt" is an online dance project that aims to challenge the gender stereotypes that are deeply embedded in our society. This dance production is strongly influenced by world-renowned dancer and choreographer PINA BAUSCH.

Workshop 2 – Sustainability in Everyday Life

In the workshop "Sustainability in Everyday Life" the participants will investigate and photographically document various traditionally "sustainable" methods, behaviours and objects that are embedded in our culture.

Participants learn to observe their surroundings more closely and to record them photographically from their personal point of view. This makes it possible to deal with the topic of sustainability and tradition on an individual, personal level. Through an introduction to photography and the use of smartphone cameras, a small brochure or exhibition will be created in conjunction with self-selected German and English captions.

The participants will also meet for several hours a day in a virtual house built exclusively for the congress. Here they can share their experiences from the workshops and their different perspectives with each other and get to know each other in happy hours, discos and through online city tours. They will also participate in digital games on these topics. In a grand finale, the artistic and discursive results of the congress will be presented at the D’haus in Düsseldorf on 4th July.

The five-day Youth Congress had many interesting performances on the final day featuring the closing performances of artists and students from ten different countries.
A photo exhibition and a video of the dance production had been created by the South Asian team.
The interaction on the virtual platform gather.town was very inspiring for the young people, especially in the difficult times we live in. We are very proud of the participants for their continuous commitment and motivation to save "Our House".

Our thanks go to Jungesschauspieltheater/ Dhaus Düsseldorf for taking an innovative approach in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut.
