We are happy to announce the Opening of the Pepper House Residency Exhibition on Friday, December 14, 2018 at 10.00 a.m.

This showing, as part of the fourth edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale with the enchanting theme 'Possibilities for a Non-Alienated Life', curated by Anita Dube, presents the artists-in-residence at Pepper House, Fort Kochi, including three bangaloREsidents@Pepper House.

After Joy by Anton Kats:

After Joy Drawing Anton Kats © Kochi Biennale Foundation After Joy is the outcome of Anton Kats' bangaloREsidency@Pepper House in 2018.
The work follows the traces of four cargo ships: Vishwa Umang, Vishwa Tarang, Vishwa Asha and Vishwa Abha - Universal Joy, Wave, Hope and Grace - that were built at the shipyard in artist’s hometown as a part of the Indo-Soviet Partnership in 1973 and 1974. The work combines a two-channel audio-visual installation at Heritage Arts and a sculpture made of scrapped propellers at the St. Paul School Junction in Kochi. After Joy is developed through a series of radio interventions in the specificity of both sites – Kherson, Ukraine and Kochi, India and draws on the correlations between Russian cosmism and the recent Ukrainian history.

Singing Patterns by Lisa Premke:

Lisa Premke created the site-specific performative installation Singing Patterns during her bangaloREsidency@Pepper House in 2018.
She was triggered by the many oppositions she saw Singing Patterns_Lisa Premke © Kochi Biennale Foundation everywhere that didn’t seem to interfere with each other in everyday life. Everything makes sound and is in motion, yet the patterns (social, visual and sonic) seemed unmoving. Singing Patterns is an experiment to make patterns move – through a water tank and chains. Patterns are created by the holes of the chains, moves by the wind. Depending on the strength of the wind, the outside will look different and by hitting against each other, the chains create different sounds. With no wind, one is either listening to the surrounding sounds, or able to pull on strings, making the chains sing manually.

Gulfi by Sophie-Therese Trenka-Dalton:

Sophie-Therese Trenka-Dalton Gulfi © Sophie-Therese Trenka-Dalton Sophie-Therese Trenka-Dalton, who was bangaloREsident@Pepper House in 2017 will present Gulfi, which explores the cultural and economic relationship between the South Indian state of Kerala and the United Arab Emirates. The photo- and videography project is a new chapter in her long-term project Dubayyland (since 2009). While working in the UAE, Sophie-Therese Trenka-Dalton learned about the specific connection between Kerala and the Emirates.

From the 1970s onwards, the Emirates continue to be a central destination for labour migration from the Malabar coast. The long-standing exchange between the two regions has shaped many personal stories in Kerala, as well as the economy of this state. Besides this, the foreign income has created individual wealth for many families.

During the Pepper House Residency Exhibition in Kochi, Trenka-Dalton will present two video works, which document different places in Kerala where this influence of the UAE manifests. Her video Dubai Ports World Kochi shows the container port of Kochi and the diverse ship traffic along the canal in front of it. Kochi is the commercial centre of Kerala. On the cranes of the container port one can read the name of the operator DP World, short for Dubai Ports World. The Emirati company manages a growing number of industrial and free ports worldwide.

The second video piece Gulfi was filmed in Kochi, Kozhikode and Malappuram district. The shots show street scenes, shops and billboards with direct motif and text references to the UAE and other Gulf states. Travel agencies use prominent buildings like the Burj Khalifa for advertisements and businesses are named after cities, such as the restaurant Sharjah Palace, the garage Abu Dhabi Motors, or the jewellery chain Dubai Gold and Diamonds.

The Exhibition remains on display till March 29, 2019.
