German Spotlight 2023: Theresia Walser

GS 2023 © Sandbox Collective

In association with Sandbox Collective since 2015, we have been inviting theatre makers to present contemporary German plays that have been translated into English in the form of a dramatised reading. The objective is to  expose theatre enthusiasts to different kinds of scripts and perspectives.

The 8th edition of German Spolight focuses on German playwright Theresia Walser and presents dramatised readings of four of her works. The English translation of all four plays has been supported by the Goethe-Institut.

walser, theresia © Karin Rocholl Theresia Walser debuted as a playwright in 1997, and her play 'King Kong's Daughter' was a huge success, she was subsequently voted Best Upcoming playwright in '98 and Best Playwright in ' 99. She has received numerous awards, fellowships and grants including the Schiller prize. She is one of Germany's most frequently produced living playwrights, and her works have been performed across the world. Walsers' works combine humour with evil and horror, resulting in a roller coaster ride of absurdist events and situations that are shockingly not so far from present day reality.

German Spotlight is curated and presented by Sandbox Collective in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Bangalore.
