Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Chennai and
Pitchandikulam Forest (A Unit under Auroville Foundation)

Context
In the very short time of less than two years, Chennai has faced the most harmful of human-induced water related disasters – from the devastating flood of December 2015 to the drought and water shortage now in 2017. It is only a question of time until the next catastrophe will happen. Both in the Chennai/Indian as in the global context it is high time to take concrete action to prevent future disasters, make the city resilient to its water problems and reclaim community ownership of water.

A Unique Eco Training Programme
With its participatory and multidisciplinary approach, this unique fellowship trains the trainers by addressing the plight of waterways in urban areas in a new way. Leadership training from a holistic perspective where the participants experience their own connection to nature and the empowerment that springs from it will be the crux of the training. It aims at a better integral understanding of urban ecology thus contributing to the fundamental change in our our vision of nature and urban development that can by no means be longer delayed.

Depending on the quality of the applications up to 8 applicants will be selected and trained to become Chennai Rivers Ambassadors. They will be trained in broader ecosystem awareness and natural resource management along with principles of change management.

  *  to enable them to lead environmental training courses for different target groups involved in river restoration, water management, flood resilience etc.

  *  to empower leaders to lead unique projects along the water ways of Chennai to sensitize local communities and to take concrete steps for action
