RASA in WESTERN CLASSICAL MUSIC…
Musik|…in an encounter with Indian Classical Music
-
Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Auditorium, Chennai
RASA has been extensively explored as the ‘essence’ of all traditional Indian Arts, be it literature, visual or performing arts.
In music and dance they form the basis of both creation and expression thereby leading to experience.
The whole process thus begins with Bhava (expression), moving on to Anubhav (experience of the artist), then Svanubhava (creative imagination and exploration) and finally culminating in Rasanubhava (that which is effectuated in the Rasika – audience).
Rasa has been broadly classified into nine basic emotions in Indian classical traditions which exist in coherence with the others, having within them many layers of transcending emotions based on various situations, happenings, moods and settings.
If emotions are universal, then it is inevitable that they are an essential part of any expressional artform, whether or not explored consciously.
In that sense we are trying to explore Rasa in Western classical music trying to draw parallels in conversation with Indian classical music, both contextually and imaginatively to enhance understanding and to be able to feel, dwell in and appreciate the experience.
We welcome you to a concert- performance where three musicians will be in conversation musically on their instruments as they complement each other through renderings depicting various emotions like love, valor, wonder …
Jayanthi Kumaresh (Veena) - Indian Carnatic
Mira T Sundararajan (Piano) - Western Classical
Samyuktha R (Violin) - Indian Carnatic & Western Classical
The concert presentation will be followed by an informal interactive session with the audience for comments and questions.
