Blueprints – Workshop with P C Malavika (visual artist/performer)

as part of Basement21 @ Goethe-Institut,
a continual series of contemporary art events

A series of events, presenting contemporary practices of live arts in India, comprising performances, lecture-demonstrations, workshops and more, leading to the annual contemporary dance festival – March Dance, jointly presented by Goethe-Institut Chennai and Basement 21 since 2017.

Performers navigate spaces leaving invisible traces as they move. Painters create images by contacting a surface with a mark-maker in their hand, making these impressions visible. The essential knot is their common ground - the body and the space. This two-day workshop is set up to explore how the act of drawing and mark-making can be approached from the point of view of a performance and vice versa. We are gathering to discover how in this meeting point these elements complement each other to create unique expressions. All the participants need are a grasp of everyday movement and a curiosity to witness the joyous intersection of drawing, performance and their body.

Malavika PC is a visual artist & a performer. Her core focus is arriving at abstractions and her approach is interdisciplinary. Here mediums are painting, paper, photography and performing. She takes inspiration from the world around her and from multiple disciplines to inform her practice and search. Her preoccupations as an artist are to discover and express the source and centres of movement, time and life within and around her. Malavika completed her Bachelors in Fine Arts from Department of Industrial Design in Ceramics from Government College of Fine Arts, Chennai. She has worked with various organisations as graphic designer, illustrator, art director and writer. Her illustrations have been published by Duckbill Publications, Blaft Publications, Sahitya Akademi, Himal South Asian, Times of India and Time Out Bengaluru among others. Her performance works navigate the line between doing and being in a series of innovative propositions.
