In collaboration with the Chennai Photo Biennale Foundation, Vaanyerum Vizhuthugal – Roots That Reach for the Sky will be showcased at VR Mall from 20th December to 16th March, as part of the 4th Edition of the Chennai Photo Biennale.
Vaanyerum Vizhuthugal embraces the idea that we are not one but many — each voice, each story, a thread in a larger tapestry. Defying a singular narrative, the curation offers a fluid, multifaceted expression of postcolonial Tamil identity. Twelve lens-based artists of Tamil origin craft their practices in a politically charged, shifting landscape — embracing contradictions and complexities.
The show creates a space where identities are reimagined, inviting reflection and resisting simple binaries.The works explore the tension between the public and the personal while holding space for the in-between. Channeling the spirit of the Dravidian and Dalit movements without being bound by nostalgia,the curatorial frameworkis a provocation on the act ofbeing multiple— asserting a vision against the reductive narrative that

Jaisingh Nageswaran is a self-taught lens-based artist and curator from Vadipatti, Madurai. His practice is deeply rooted in acknowledging the land and language he comes from. Through documenting his own family history, he represents and talks about the broader social implications involved. Beginning his own project, 'The Lodge', at the KG + Select at the Kyotographie Festival in Japan marked the start of his curatorial journey. He further co-curated two editions of Vaanam Art Festival in Chennai and has also participated in the Khoj Curatorial Intensive South Asia Fellowship.He was awarded the Musée du Quai Branly Jacques Chirac Photography Award in France.
