Stereoscopic Narratives
An exhibition
Stereoscopic Narratives brings together the different perspectives of the artists and the community collaborators who developed Chitpur Local, a community based, public art project in Chitpur Road, Kolkata. Through six installations, each reflecting the unusual journeys of the artists and their community collaborators, this exhibition unpacks ideas of collaboration and participation in community-based practices and explores the role of art and culture in everyday life.
Artist led walk-through and interactions will be held with the Art Circulator, a mobile art making station, that will connect gallery to the streets on each day of the exhibition.
The exhibition will open on 15 September 2018 at 5:30 pm and will be on until 7.30 pm on that day.
Artists will be present on all days between 4:30 pm and 6:30 pm to speak with visitors and share their journeys.
About Hamdasti
Hamdasti, meaning partnership in Persian, is a non-profit arts organization based in Kolkata, India that develops collaborations between artists and communities.
They believe that art and design play a critical role in creating public platforms for dialogue, interaction, civic participation and social engagement.
Hamdasti supports fellowships in which creative practitioners from diverse fields work with communities, schools and government departments to collectively design and implement cultural projects.
Through innovative, community-driven art and design practices, we aim to strengthen the relationships between people, communities and their cities.
Chitpur Local was initiated by Hamdasti in 2014, building collaborations between artists and local communities to develop projects in schools, local craft studios, club houses, historic buildings and even the police station that explore the diverse stories of these communities, their contemporary concerns and visions for the future. Every two years these projects culminate in a public art festival, bringing people together to experience this historic locality in new ways.

Art Circulator
On each day of the exhibition, the artists will attempt to connect the streets to gallery. They will place a mobile art making station at the Park Street Corner, inviting passersby and visitors to respond to different provocations, and create artworks that can be added to ongoing show to bring in new voices and perspectives. The station will be transformed on each of the six days to circulate the six different projects, and the artworks generated on the streets will incrementally shape the art works inside the gallery.

Celebrating Chitpur
How are community based, public art projects perceived by those who experience it as participants? Community members who were invaluable to creating, developing and supporting Chitpur Local will share their experiences of collaborating with artists to develop projects in their neighbourhood. They will be joined by people who visited the festival to celebrate Chitpur and reflect back on the projects they experienced together.

Behind the Scenes
The 7 participating artists will be presenting their experience of building collaborative projects with students, local residents, photographers, print makers and police officers at Chitpur, and their learnings on their role as creative practitioners working in communities.
The closing of the exhibition will also mark the launch of the Fellowship for the third edition of Chitpur Local, opening up opportunities for the larger community of creative practitioners in Kolkata to envision new initiatives and receive support to bring their ideas to life.
